Dr. Nikolaos K. Paschos is orthopedic sports medicine surgeon specialized in arthroscopic surgery of the knee, hip and shoulder joints, in sport injuries and in regenerative medicine in children and young adults. He currently serves as the Chief of the Division of Pediatric Orthopedics at the Department of Orthopedic Surgery at Massachusetts General Hospital, the Director of Youth Sports Medicine at Mass general Brigham and the Director of Pediatric Orthopedic Research at Mass General Hospital for Children. He is a Clinical Assistant Professor at Harvard Medical School.
Dr. Paschos received his medical degree with honors from the University of Ioannina Medical School, Greece. He did his residency in Orthopaedic Surgery at the University Hospital of Ioannina, Greece, University Hospital of Cork, Ireland and Thomas Jefferson University, USA. Dr. Paschos completed three years of fellowship training at University of Pennsylvania Hospital, at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, at the Boston Children’s Hospital, and at the New England Baptist Hospital. He also served as an academic fellow at Hospital of Special Surgery at New York. He also performed a Patellofemoral Fellowship in Lyon France, London, UK and Finland.
He holds a PhD degree with honors in ACL anatomy and biomechanics and he did four years of postdoctoral research in biomechanics and tissue engineering at University of Davis, California. Prior to joining MGH, he served as a clinical instructor in Orthopedics at Tufts University School of Medicine.
Dr. Paschos served as an Associate Editor for the Arthroscopy Journal and he is a Fellow of the Arthroscopy Association of North America. He is member of different committees at American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine, International Society of Arthroscopy, Knee Surgery and Orthopedic Sports Medicine. He has served in the Executive Board of the European Federation of National Associations of Orthopedics and Traumatology (EFORT) and also as a member of the Steering Board of the EFORT Educational Committee. He has served as president and board member of the Federation of Orthopedic Trainees in Europe.
Dr. Paschos has served as a member of the medical team of sports teams of various levels, including the Boston Celtics, UMass Boston, UPenn Athletics, Merrimack College, and high School level.
The main objective of Dr. Paschos research is to optimize the management of sports related injuries and conditions, focusing on patellofemoral conditions, Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL), meniscus and cartilage injuries. He also has a special interest in stem cell, tissue engineering and biomechanics research and its application in clinical practice.
He has more than 100 publications and oral presentations in the field with more than 4,000 citations. His research has been awarded several awards from several organizations and foundations such as the International Society of Arthroscopy Knee Surgery and Orthopedic Sports Medicine, the European Society for Sports Traumatology, Knee Surgery and Arthroscopy, and the World Council of Biomechanics, the Arthroscopic Association of North America and the Pediatric Orthopedic Society of North America.
