Graduated from the Medical School of Kapodistrian Athens National University.
Residency at Orthopaedic Clinic of Athens University.
PhD from the University of Athens.
Fellowship in Orthopaedic Sports Medicine and Orthopaedic Research, at Duke University in Durham, North Carolina USA (1983-86).
“O Donoghue” award from the American Orthopeadic Society of Sports Medicine (1986) for his innovative work in Anterior Cruciate Ligament Transplantation.
“Kappa Delta” award of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (!997) for his research in Physiology of Muscular Injuries,
President elected of the Hellenic Association of Orthopaedic Surgery and Traumatology (HAOST) for 2017.
Member of many Greek and International Medical Societies (EEXOT, EAE, AAOS, ESSKA, ISAKOS, ICRS, Piedmont Orthopaedic Society, EFOST, ACL Study Group, ORS) and author of numerous publications in both Greek and International Medical journals and co-author in textbooks.
Dr. Nikolaou also enjoyed a great soccer career. He was a football (soccer) player of AEK Football Club from 1971 to 1982 and a player of all Greek football National teams.
He was named “Athlete of the Year” twice in 1974 and 1979 from the Hellenic Sports Association.
He was the official doctor of the Greek National Football Team from 1987 up to 1994 and has been the Head doctor for AEK Football Club since 1987 to the present.
He was also the Head doctor for Olympiakos football and basketball teams ( 2003 to 2009).
